Off center vinyl record. The only way to fix the problem is to crudely widen the spindle hole with a knife and then manually center the record each time you play it. It is fairly common but seems much worse these days. When record spins you will see the cartridge moving side to side. Without proper alignment the needle is unable to track in the grooves and may cause it to wobble back and forth between the groove.
It could even be something such as the paper label extending over the spindle hole on the record that is preventing the record from rotating concentrically. Not all records are produced to equal quality standards. Off center meaning the hole in the record is drilled a little off center. Luckily only the first half of the album was pressed off center.
Sadly if one record is off center the whole batch is normally off meaning that any replacement record will almost certainly have the exact same problem. A record clamp will help you secure the disc in. If it s just at the outer edge then that s a warp. A warp can cause damage to a stylus if it s severe or is causing the needle to actually catch air off the record.
Off center pressing is essentially when the spindle hole in the center of the album is not properly aligned to the center of the grooves. The sound produced is pitchy. The label in the center of the record didn t rotate perfectly from its center as the record spun causing it to move in a way that made it pretty obvious.
