No Subfloor Under Wood Floor
No matter which subfloor you are dealing with you need to let everyone involved know what is needed for a successful wood flooring installation.
No subfloor under wood floor. Regardless of the type of wood flooring if water or moisture has been sighted the method above can be used to remove the moisture and return the floor to a dry state. Water leaks can happen under various types of flooring. Wood subfloor measure and cut 1 4 inch or thicker plywood with a circular saw to fit the entire floor of the room where you are installing vinyl flooring. Hardwood flooring may be installed straight onto the subfloor with only a sheet of red rosin paper intervening.
Sub flooring must be installed with the strength axis perpendicular to the flooring joists. Allow for a 1 32 inch gap between subflooring panels when installing hardwood flooring to accommodate swelling with increased moisture content. There can be water under engineered wood floor as well as water under wood laminate flooring. Do not use sealer or drywall compound to fill cracks and dents in the sub floor as this may deteriorate over time.
If the subfloor is smooth enough an underlayment may not be needed for laminate. However if the original door frames are elevated off the wood floor by at least 3 4 they intended to go back and add a second finished floor on top of that subfloor. An underlayment is a necessity for any wood floor installation even on a plywood subfloor. Your customer may not see what is beneath the beautiful wood floor but what you do below determines how the floor will look above.
The underlayment provides many benefits including moisture protection sound and thermal insulation and a cushion to make the floor more comfortable to walk on. The warranty may require it. Nail down or floating floors may be installed over existing vinyl as long as it s no more than two layers thick.
